Charlie Sheen and acting out

Don't get me wrong; I don't obsess about Charlie Sheen but it did occur to me that he falls into one of two categories of celebs. I can think of.  The first is the "good" celeb--the one who is friendly, does good works, treats other people well, etc.  The second is the bad guy/ bad girl" celeb--the one who can't seem to exercise good impulse control (trashes hotel rooms, other people), is often mean to others, narcissistic, does whatever he wants whenever he/she wants because he/she is a celeb, abuses drugs and alcohol because "it feels good," etc.  It seems to me that while both types can be attractive, we are often most taken with the second.  I wonder if this is because that type of celeb is acting out the kind of impulses and emotions that civilized people are supposed to repress.  I wonder, in short, if the second type is a proxy for what secretly any one of us would like to do if there weren't any consequences to so doing.  In short, I wonder if Charlie Sheen is really my Freudian Id in disguise.

I also wonder if the first type may not represent an "ego ideal", someone who, for various reasons, we would like to be like.  I wonder, in short, if the first type is either my ego or superego (all those good deeds I think I should do but don't).  Again, in short, I wonder if this individual is my Freudian ego and/or superego in disguise.

  1. Going off of your suggestion that Charlie Sheen falls in to one of two categories: the good, friendly celeb, or the "bad boy" celeb, I would have to say he falls into both. As someone who didn't keep a close eye on this particular celebrity until this explosion of nonsense, my general feeling towards Sheen was that he was a "good" celebrity. Of the few movies or TV shows I've seen him in, he was usually portrayed as a nice, quirky guy. Maybe I carried his acting over into my perception of him in real life, but until recently, I had no problem with Charlie Sheen as a person or as a celebrity....NOW, on the other hand, I would say he is trying his absolute hardest to be the "bad boy". For someone to fall so hard from such a successful point in his career, he must have been putting some effort behind it. Another great example of someone who either feels invincible or is just trying very hard to stay in the spotlight even if its for negative reasons is Lindsey Lohan. I still remember her debut in "The Parent Trap". She was this cute adorable little girl with freckles and pigtails....today, she wears an alcohol monitoring ankle bracelet on her way to court for the umpteenth time. In recent news, she is dropping her last name and now wishes to be called simply, Lindsey. Icons like Madonna and Cher, I'm sure, would not appreciate the association with now single-named reckless, drugged-out, mess of a girl. I'm honestly just waiting for the sex tape to come out...Miss Lindsey and Mr. Sheen should get together and truly put the icing on the cake of disaster that is their lives.
